CANINE INFECTIOUS RESPIRATORY DISEASE
We are writing to address the recent reports and concerns surrounding a national mystery disease affecting dogs across the country.
At Riverview Kennels, the health and safety of your pets are our top priorities. We are closely monitoring the situation and staying in constant communication with veterinary experts, local authorities, and relevant organizations to gather the latest information on the nature and scope of this mysterious illness.
Our Proactive Measures
At the time of publication, there are no confirmed cases on the Southern Coast of Oregon. However, we want to reassure you that we are taking proactive measures to ensure the well-being of all pets in our care. These measures include:
Increased Vigilance: Our staff is trained to recognize any signs of illness in pets, and we are implementing additional health checks to detect potential symptoms early. Until further notification, we will limit the number of out-of-area dogs.
Enhanced Cleaning Protocols: We have intensified our cleaning and sanitation procedures to minimize the risk of any potential transmission. You can read about our cleaning protocols here.
Enforced Vaccination Protocols: We have extensive processes in place during normal operations to ensure that each canine guest is up-to-date on the following vaccinations: DHLPP, bordetella, and rabies. You can read more about our vaccination requirements here.
Isolation Protocols: If a pet shows any signs of illness, we have established isolation protocols to prevent the spread of disease to other animals. This includes the following stages: 1) Identify Symptoms—> 2) Seek Veterinary Care—> 3) Engage Emergency Contact—> 4) Maintain Isolation
Collaboration with Veterinary Experts: We are working closely with veterinary specialists to stay informed about the latest developments and to ensure that our practices align with the best available guidance.
Pay Attention for These Symptoms
While the exact nature of the illness is still under investigation, some common symptoms have been observed in affected dogs around the US. It's important to note that these symptoms may vary, and not all dogs exhibit the same signs. Please be on the lookout for:
Coughing and Sneezing: Persistent coughing or sneezing that goes beyond normal behavior may be cause for concern.
Difficulty Breathing: Labored breathing or any signs of respiratory distress should be addressed promptly.
Vomiting and Diarrhea: Unexplained or frequent vomiting and diarrhea can be indicative of underlying health issues.
Lethargy: A significant decrease in energy levels, reluctance to play, or overall lethargy may be a sign of illness.
Loss of Appetite: If your pet shows a sudden disinterest in food or experiences a significant decrease in appetite, it's important to take notice.
Nasal Discharge and Eye Discharge: Unusual or persistent discharge from the nose or eyes may warrant attention.
Increased Thirst and Urination: Drastic changes in drinking or urination habits may signal an issue.
Fever: Elevated body temperature, especially when accompanied by other symptoms, should be addressed promptly.
Upper respiratory infections can be transmitted at a dog park, a pet store, from a neighborhood dog, a daycare, the groom spa, the vet's office, or anywhere that dogs come in contact with one another. If your dog is showing symptoms of any upper respiratory illness, please avoid all areas above until they are symptom-free for at least 7 days. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
The health and happiness of your pets are of the utmost importance to us, and we are dedicated to providing the highest standard of care. We will continue to keep you updated on any developments and remain available to address any questions or concerns you may have.
Thank you for entrusting us with the care of your furry family members.
Sincerely,
Kimberly & Michael Guzman (Riverview Kennels Owners)
